On this page you will find an overview of the most famous poker terms and their meanings. This way you get to know the poker terminology quickly and easily.

The Poker Terms

Add-on - In a rebuy tournament, buying extra chips at the end of the rebuy period. This is possible for everyone who is still in the tournament. It is always one fixed amount for a fixed number of chips.

Ante - Mandatory bet that every player must place in a hand before dealing. Used to put extra money in the pot if the blinds don't match.

All-in - All the chips you have bet. Go all-in .

Bad Beat - If you lose a hand that you were statistically in favor of, we call it a Bad Beat.

Bankroll - Your total assets to play poker with.

Bet - Betting if no one has already done so - opening a betting round. See also Types of bets .

Blank / Brick - A community card that is of no use to anyone or that does not change the game. Often a low card such as a 2 or a 3.

Blinds - Mandatory bets that the two people after the button must place before the hand begins. The first player posts the Small Blind, the Second the Big Blind, who is often 2x the small blind. (but not always!)

Big stack - A person who has a relatively large number of chips.

Boat - Full House

Board - The community cards together form the Board.

Bounty - Money you get in some tournaments for eliminating a player.

Bubble - When 100 people receive money from a tournament, the person eliminated in 101st place is the Bubble. It is the last person not to receive any money, so the bubble of no money has burst.

Button - A symbolic disc that indicates where the game begins: the player after the button always starts. If you are on the button you have the best position, because you always get to last.

Buy-In - The amount you deposit to enter a tournament or cash game.

Call - Go with the current bet - place as much as the previous player.

Cash game - Also called Ring Game . A game where the chips actually represent money, as opposed to a tournament where they have no real value.

Check - Do not bet anything if no one else has bet. If everyone checks in a betting round, a new card comes up without anyone betting.

Coinflip - Situation where two people go all-in, and when the cards are shown, they both have about a 50% chance of winning. The best-known example is when someone holds a Pocket Pair, say 99, and the other two cards higher than this pair, say AK.

Continuation Bet - A bet to continue your initiative. If you raised before the flop, you usually also bet after the flop; that is a continuation bet. 

Cut-off - The player in front of the button.

Draw - If you have an opportunity to hit a flush or a straight, we call this a draw. For example, you have 4 diamonds (for the Flush) or 5678 (for the Straight).

Flop - The first three community cards.

Flush - 5 Cards of the same suit (Hearts, Diamonds, Spades, Clubs)

Fold - Put your hand away - give up.

Four of a kind (Quads) - Four cards of the same rank.

Freeroll - Tournament where you do not deposit money, but you can win money.

Freeze-out - Tournament where you cannot buy-in again - if you lose your chips you are out.

Full House - When you have 3 cards of one rank and 2 of another. For example AAAKK or 99922.

Hand - The cards you are dealt. Also means the total game progress of a round. 'Nice hand' also means 'nicely played'.

Heads-up - If you play poker with two people, this is Heads-up.

Hold'em - Also called Texas Hold'em. Poker variant where you are dealt two cards and 5 extra cards are placed on the board. From this you make a combination of the 5 best cards.

Kicker - Also called your side card. If there is an ace on the board and two players also have an ace, the card they have is looked at. Usually AK wins from A7, for example, in this case. We call the K and the 7 kickers.

Limp - Calling the big blind without raising.

Muck - The pile of cards discarded by players. If you discard your cards without showing them, it is also called mucking.

No limit - Variant of poker where you can always bet all your chips when it is your turn. So there is no limit to the bet amount.

Nuts - The absolute best, unbeatable hand in any situation. For example, on a board of J 5 2, the nuts are JJ.

Omaha - A variant of poker where instead of 2 cards you are dealt 4 cards in each hand. Want to know more about Omaha?

One Pair - Two cards have the same rank.

Odds / outs - Odds is the ratio of a bet to the pot. Your outs are the number of cards you can win the hand with. Everything about Odds and Outs .

Poker Face - A neutral, emotionless facial expression that is meant to keep your opponent from seeing which hand you have.

Position - The relative position at the table to the Button. The Button is considered the best position. The more to the left of the button, the worse your position . 

Rake - A portion of the pot or stake that a casino or poker room occupies in exchange for the services rendered.

Raise - Increase the current bet.

Re-buy - You buy back into a tournament after losing all your chips.

Royal Flush - The best possible hand in poker. You need a TJQKA straight for this, all of the same kind.

River - We call the fifth and final community card the River.

Set - A Three of a Kind where you have two of the three cards in your hand and the other of the three is on the board. They are Trips when there are two or three of the cards on the board.

Shorthanded - When you sit at the table with few people.

Short stack - If you have relatively few chips left, you are a short stack.

Showdown - The situation that occurs after the river betting round when both players have bet the same amount. The players show their cards and compare them. The best hand wins the pot.

Split pot - If several players have the same hand after the showdown, the pot is split.

Stakes - The stake you are playing with. If you're playing with blinds of 1 and 2 euros, these are the stakes. High stakes are poker games where a lot of money is played.

Steal - Stealing from the blind. If there are few people left except you and the blinds, you can raise to make an attempt to take those blinds for free. We call that a steal.

Straight - Five cards in sequence.

Straight Flush - A straight whose cards are also of the same suit.

Swing (up / down) - An upswing means that you run very well for a while and you earn a lot of money. With a downswing you are losing a lot for a period of time.

Three of a kind - Three cards of the same rank.

Tilt - When you are frustrated and you start playing worse we call this tilt. You're on a roll if you don't play your best game out of emotion.

Trips - Three of a kind where 2 or 3 of the cards are on the board, and only 1 or 0 in your hand.

Turn - We call the fourth community card the Turn.

Two Pair - Two pairs, e.g. AA44 or 7744.

Under the Gun - The first position after the blinds. The one who can say it first in one hand. This is the worst position before the flop.
